Stepping from Winter’s Silence into the Fragrant World of Maehwa
There is a moment in Korea, right when winter is finally losing its grip, when the air turns soft and a delicate scent hints at the coming warmth. That scent belongs to the Maehwa (매화), or Plum Blossoms—the true heralds of spring.

And there is no better place to witness this quiet transition than at Tongdosa Temple (통도사) in Yangsan, one of Korea’s most sacred sites. If you plan your visit during late February to mid-March, you will be treated to a spectacle that is both historical and deeply moving.
A UNESCO Masterpiece: Why Tongdosa is the ‘Buddha Jewel Temple’

Before we dive into the flowers, we must understand the spiritual weight of this place. Tongdosa is not just a beautiful temple; it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and holds the revered title of a ‘Three Jewel Temple’ (삼보사찰), specifically the ‘Buddha Jewel Temple.’
Why the high honor?
- No Buddha Statue: Tongdosa is unique because it famously has no main Buddha statue inside its main Dharma Hall (Daeungjeon).
- True Relics: Instead, the temple enshrines the actual Sarira (진신사리), or relics, of the historical Buddha, Sakyamuni, which are housed in a stupa behind the main hall. This means the building itself is a kind of sanctuary, making your visit a journey to the Buddha’s essence.

Walking through its ancient gates, you are literally surrounded by over 1,300 years of profound history and spirituality—a truly awe-inspiring feeling that transcends a simple flower viewing trip.
The Main Event: Chasing the Crimson Hongmae
While you are here, you cannot miss the famous plum blossoms. Tongdosa is particularly famous for its stunning Hongmae (홍매, Red Plum) trees.

These crimson-colored blooms create a powerful contrast against the ancient wooden halls and the serene stone paths.
- Best Spot: The most famous Hongmae is often found near the Bulimun (불이문, Non-Duality Gate) or tucked away behind the main courtyard. Following the faint, sweet scent is often the best navigation tool!
- The Atmosphere: The temple grounds are usually quiet in the early morning, offering a peaceful space for photography and quiet reflection before the main rush of spring visitors arrives.

Practical Tips for Your Sacred Spring Visit
To make your trip perfect, timing and preparation are key.
| Category | Tip for Maehwa Season |
| Timing | Late February to Mid-March. The peak bloom is highly weather-dependent, so check local Yangsan or Tongdosa blogs just before you go! |
| Experience | Take time to walk the entire perimeter, including the Jongno (종로, Bell Tower). The historical architecture is a breathtaking companion to the blossoms. |
| What to Wear | Although the flowers say “spring,” the weather can still be chilly. Dress warmly in layers, especially if arriving at sunrise. |
What I liked the most about 통도사
For those of us who aren’t the biggest fans of the long winter, the Maehwa serve as the true, official declaration that spring has finally arrived. There is a profound sense of relief and joy that comes from being present in that exact moment, breathing the fragrant air, and feeling the season shift in person.
And finally, a culinary tip: The traditional restaurant located right in front of the temple’s entrance is absolutely amazing! Their food is authentic and comforting—I highly recommend stopping there. It was the perfect, delicious ending to my spiritual and visual journey.
